Flying is the cheapest and quickest legal way to fry the planet. Tax breaks, no fuel taxation or even carbon pricing are a free pass for cheap fares which simply fuel traffic growth, CO2 emissions and sky high non CO2 climate warming. Literally! Who’ll stop this post Covid?

Here’s what needs to be done:

 

Tax

▶ End aviation tax exemptions — starting in Europe

▶ Tax fuel or carbon emissions in the EU and on EU to UK flights

▶ If not through the Energy Tax Directive, then bilaterally/multilaterally

▶ Fix lost VAT — through ticket taxes

 

Non-CO2 climate forcers

▶ Aviation’s climate impact is 3 times that of CO2 alone

▶ Cut more warming right now than all foreseeable aviation technology or SAF will

▶ Start by changing flight levels of one in twenty trans-Atlantic flights

▶ Set sulphur and aromatic limits — starting with kerosene

▶ Apply distance-based cruise NOx charging — via long-haul ticket taxes

 

Longhaul

▶ Cut longhaul emissions now — two thirds of EU aviation CO2

▶ Forget false solutions — both Corsia or an ETS snap back

▶ Through ticket taxes — with distance bands

▶ On business class and bus-jet pax — just like the UK APD

▶ Collected via check-in technology — not by airlines

 

MBMs Command & Control

▶ EU ETC raises € but doesn’t cut CO2 — flanking measures will

▶ So tax fuel/CO2 emissions. Ticket taxes. No free allocation

▶ And eventually via an all-outbound clean fuel/PtX mandate — starting now

▶ But demand must be constrained — to minimise the RES needed for PtX
